How do I get my dog to stop barking?

Barking is one type of vocal communication that dogs use, and it can mean different things depending on the situation.

Territorial/Protective – Barking is often motivated by a perceived threat to their territory or people.

Alarm/Fear – Barking motivated by fear is often a warning telling the other person or dog that your dog is not comfortable and they want you to go away.

Boredom/Loneliness (Separation Anxiety) – Barking is often as a result of a lack of exercise or mental stimulation.

Greeting/Play – This excitement barking should never be rewarded.  Do not pet, make eye contact or acknowledge until your dog.  Give it a job by asking them to sit.  Once the dog stops barking and sits quietly calmly reward this behavior.

Attention Seeking – NEVER reward this behavior or you will teach them to bark every time they want something.  Find other ways for your dog to communicate without barking.
